Old-Fashioned Swiss Steak: Tender, Saucy, and Full of Nostalgia
Few dishes capture true American comfort cooking like Old-Fashioned Swiss Steak. For generations, families have prepared this tender braised beef simmered in a rich tomato-onion gravy. It’s inexpensive, hearty, and deeply flavorful — the kind of meal that fills both your home and your heart with warmth.
Despite its name, Swiss steak isn’t from Switzerland. “Swissing” refers to tenderizing the meat — pounding or rolling it to break down the fibers. That tenderization, followed by long slow braising, transforms an inexpensive cut of beef into melt-in-your-mouth comfort food.

Old-fashioned Swiss steak is exactly the kind of recipe that grandmothers, church potlucks, and family dinner tables made popular. Simple ingredients. Slow simmering. A savory tomato gravy that tastes even better the next day. And a wholesome, hearty vibe that brings people together.
