Method
- Melt a small amount of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly until deeply caramelized, about 20–25 minutes.
- Thinly slice the apple and set aside.
- Butter one side of each bread slice. Place one slice butter-side down in the skillet.
- Layer cheddar and Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, apple slices, thyme, salt, and pepper. Top with second slice butter-side up.
- Cook over medium-low heat until golden brown, flip carefully, and cook until cheese is melted.
- Remove from skillet, rest briefly, slice, and serve warm.
Notes
For best results, cook the sandwich slowly to ensure even melting without burning.
