Ingredients
  

Gratin Base
  • 2.5 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter for greasing dish
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 0.125 tsp nutmeg optional
Cheese Mixture
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese shredded
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese grated, optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, warm cream, milk, garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg over medium heat until steaming.
  3. Layer one-third of the potatoes in the dish, pour some cream mixture over, and sprinkle with cheese.
  4. Repeat layers, finishing with cheese on top.
  5. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake 20–25 minutes more until golden and bubbling.
  6. Rest 10 minutes before serving; garnish with thyme or parsley.
