  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp ground cloves
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • 0.33 cup molasses
  • 2 eggs large
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips optional
Glaze (Optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, and molasses, whisking until smooth.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract, mixing until glossy and well combined.
  5. Gradually fold in dry ingredients, stirring just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. If using chocolate chips, gently fold them into the batter.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pan, spreading evenly with a spatula.
  8. Bake for 28-32 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Cool completely in pan before cutting into squares.
  10. If desired, whisk glaze ingredients until smooth and drizzle over cooled brownies.

Notes

These brownies improve in flavor after a day or two. Store in airtight container for up to one week or freeze for up to 3 months. Perfect for holiday gift-giving!
