- In a saucepan, whisk sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Slowly add milk while whisking.
- Cook over medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
- Temper egg yolks with warm pudding mixture, then return to saucepan.
- Cook 2–3 minutes more until pudding is thick and smooth. Remove from heat.
- Stir in butter and vanilla until melted and combined. Let cool slightly.
- Layer wafers, bananas, and pudding in a serving dish. Repeat layers.
- Top with whipped cream and additional wafers if desired.
- Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
For best flavor, chill overnight. Use firm bananas to prevent browning.
