Ingredients
  

  • 8 cups bread cubes day-old
  • 6 eggs large
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg optional
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter for greasing and topping

Method
 

  1. Butter a baking dish and add bread cubes.
  2. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, spices, and salt.
  3. Pour custard over bread and press gently.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat oven and dot casserole with butter.
  6. Bake until puffed, golden, and set.
  7. Rest briefly, slice, and serve.

Notes

Best made with day-old bread for optimal texture.
