Ingredients
  

Loaf
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 1.5 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1.25 cups buttermilk
  • 1 egg large
Garlic Butter Topping
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 0.5 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 pinch salt

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and baking soda.
  3. Cut cold butter into flour mixture using pastry cutter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Fold in shredded cheddar cheese, distributing evenly throughout mixture.
  5. In separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg until combined.
  6. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and fold gently just until combined, avoiding overmixing.
  7. Transfer batter to prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake 45-55 minutes until golden brown and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  9. While loaf bakes, combine melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, and salt for topping.
  10. Immediately brush garlic butter over hot loaf when removed from oven.
  11. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then transfer to wire rack. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

Store wrapped at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days. Freezes well for up to 3 months. Reheat slices in toaster or warm entire loaf wrapped in foil at 300°F.
