Ingredients
  

Sloppy Joe Mixture
  • 1 pound ground beef 85/15 lean-to-fat ratio
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 bell pepper diced
  • 0.67 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 0.5 tsp smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 cup beef broth
Garlic Bread
  • 1 large French bread loaf
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
  • 0.25 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
Topping
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped for garnish

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cook ground beef in large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking apart with wooden spoon, until browned, 6-8 minutes.
  3. Add diced onion and bell pepper to skillet, cooking 4-5 minutes until vegetables soften.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and cook 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, paprika, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  6. Pour in beef broth and bring mixture to a simmer.
  7. Reduce heat to low and simmer 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  8. Slice French bread in half lengthwise.
  9. Mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, garlic powder, and salt in small bowl.
  10. Spread garlic butter mixture evenly over both bread halves.
  11. Bake bread on prepared baking sheet 8-10 minutes until lightly golden and crispy.
  12. Remove bread and evenly distribute sloppy joe mixture over both halves.
  13. Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar cheeses over meat mixture.
  14. Return to oven and bake 8-10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  15. Garnish with fresh parsley, cool 2-3 minutes, then slice and serve.

Notes

For extra flavor, add jalapeños or different cheese blends. The sloppy joe mixture can be made ahead and frozen for up to 3 months. Store leftovers in refrigerator up to 3 days.
